Understanding Sanitizers and Cross Contamination
February, 2026

To Our Customers, Suppliers, and Friends:

So, you think purchasing a jug of sanitizer is a great way to save money and will ensure you are protecting you customers and associates?  Think Again!!

We do not think so and that is why we will never recommend “topping up” or reusing our bottles!  Being “Penny Wise and Pound Foolish” is NOT the solution.

Cross-contamination with bulk hand sanitizer is a significant public health risk, particularly when using “open-refill” or “top-off” systems, where approximately one in four dispensers can become contaminated with bacteria.  These dispensers act as fomites, potentially increasing bacterial load on hands by 26-fold if the sanitizer itself is contaminated.

Key Risks of Bulk Hand Sanitizer Contamination

Microbial Growth: Bulk dispensers, often simple plastic reservoirs refilled from large containers, are prone to extrinsic bacterial contamination (e.g., Serratia marcescens).

Formula Mixing (“Topping Off”): Mixing different, incompatible sanitizer formulas during “top-off” can reduce efficacy, alter pH, and lead to unwanted microbial growth or skin irritation.

Reduced Alcohol Content: The constant opening and exposure to air in bulk systems can cause alcohol to evaporate, reducing the concentration below the 60% minimum required for effectiveness.

Contaminated Products: Some bulk sanitizers have been found to contain hazardous, non-FDA-approved ingredients like methanol.

Preventing Cross-Contamination in Bulk Systems

Use Sealed Refills: Replacing open-refill systems with sealed, collapsible refill dispensers eliminates the risk of external contamination, as shown in studies where sealed systems remained free of contamination over a 12-month period.

Avoid “Topping Off”: Never mix new sanitizer with old, and ensure containers are completely empty before refilling.

Maintenance: Regularly clean the exterior of dispensers, especially the nozzle and lever, where bacteria collect.

Proper Storage: Store bulk containers in secure, cool areas, and ensure they are properly labeled with brand names and lot numbers.

Use Touch-Free Systems: Touch-free automated dispensers reduce the need for users to touch potentially contaminated surfaces.
